The immune system not only protects our body from pathogens such as bacteria and viruses but also defends it against the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. Unfortunately, some cancer cells can outsmart the immune system, altering themselves in a way that prevents detection as a threat. In a six-year research project, Oskar Staufer, a junior researcher group leader at the INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken, aims to decipher the camouflage strategies of cancer cells using newly developed materials. The German Research Foundation (DFG) has granted him €2.4 million from the Emmy Noether programme to realize his project.

His expertise and scientific commitment have convinced: the head of the research group „Immuno-Materials“ at INM has been appointed to the DECHEMA Zukunftsforum Biotechnologie. His research activities and dedication to science and society are expected to enrich the 20-member group of young scientists.
Congratulations to Dr. Lola González-García, Head of INM’s Junior Research Group “Electrofluids”. At the 2nd Annual Conference on Global Nanotechnology, she received the Nanoseries Innovation Award 2023.
On June 27th, the President of the Leibniz Association, Prof. Martina Brockmeier, paid a visit to the INM. She brought along inspiring discussions and valuable food for thought. The INM management was delighted to have the opportunity to speak with her about the challenges of the coming years. INM doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers also benefited from her visit and exchanged thoughts with her regarding the specific situation of young researchers in the scientific community.

INM has a state-of-the-art infrastructure for in situ Electron Microscopy and seeks a Group Leader in Advanced Electron Microscopy (M/F/D) to establish a vibrant own research program and collaborate with existing scientific groups. This opening primarily targets junior scientists after their first postdoctoral stay aiming to consolidate their independent profile in the field. Senior scientists are also welcome to apply.
We will provide funding for your position as junior group leader, 2 PhD students, and one postdoctoral scientist. Start-up funding to set up your group and your research line and reasonable yearly funding for consumables will also be offered. The position is planned as a 5-years position.
